The West Bengal state government is planning to generate 180 MW of solar power in the next two years, an upgrade from the state current meagre contribution of 7 MW. For this purpose, the state has identified 1,300 government buildings, schools and hospitals for setting up solar panels. The target, projected to cost Rs 1,000 crore, is planned in two stages - 61 MW in 2016-17 and 120 MW in 2017-18. The state hopes to cut down the expenses of several crore once the panels are fitted on the rooftops and terraces.
